About Us

At Naval Medical Center San Diego, our number one priority is providing the safest, highest quality patient-centered medical care for our veterans, service members and their families. Through visionary leadership and staff dedicated to the Team STEPPS approach, our hospital continues to shape the future of military medicine.

In 2014, we received more than 1.2 million outpatient visits, admitted more than 19,000 patients, and filled over 1.6 million prescriptions. Nearly 3,600 babies took their very first breaths here at NMCSD, including one who was born in our Courtyard!

NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty, civilians, contractors and volunteers working throughout the Southern California region. Our staff has a wide array of experience and educational background, coming to us from some of the finest medical learning institutions in the Nation – Harvard, Johns Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania, and others.

Accredited by the Joint Commission, NMCSD takes pride in serving those who serve. We are the only Navy Medicine amputee center in the Western Pacific. We also strive to obtain the most technologically advanced equipment to match the most-qualified staff to provide unmatched quality care.  We are the only medical facility in San Diego that employs four state-of-the art “3T-Tesla” MRI units, which include ambient lighting and audio/visual equipment for a better patient experience. The image quality produced at the NMCSD MRI Center is outstanding, usually exceeding community standards.

NMCSD also recently renovated its Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory making this unique hybrid lab the first of its kind in California, and seventh in the nation. The new facility allows us to care for all structural heart and endovascular consults for patients from across California and neighboring states. With these state of the art cathlabs, NMCSD's cardiologists, radiologists, and vascular surgeons can provide the latest treatments to our patients to include coronary artery angioplasty and stenting, Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)/ patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, peripheral artery angioplasty and stenting, and percutaneous repair of aortic aneurysms.
Recently, the NMCSD staff has been recognized for excellence by organizations such as the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Athena International, National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), our Ob-Gyn Department received the DoD Patient Safety Award and our Hematology/Oncology department was recognized as one of the best cancer centers.

Throughout its proud history, Naval Medical Center San Diego has established itself as a leader in the field of medicine. That reputation for excellence continues today as our staff propels NMCSD into the 21st century.
