Health Services

Vision

The primary mission of the department is to correct vision problems of active duty personnel in the San Diego area so they are visually ready to perform their duties. Secondary missions include providing clinical training for optometry students and ophthalmology residents.

The Optometry Department offers a variety of specialty services to meet many of your eye care needs.

We have six locations around the San Diego area with most clinics offering appointment availability for Active Duty Personnel Monday - Friday. We are currently unable to see retirees or dependents in our clinics for exams due to staffing shortages.

Please call the Optometry Appointment Desk at (619) 532-9830 to schedule your next eye exam.

In case of emergency during clinic hour (M-F 0700-1600), please call (619) 532-5840 and a technician will assist you in determining the proper course of action.
In case of emergency after hours, please visit the NMCSD Emergency Room.

Vision Tests

Special Vision Testing

Aviation Screenings and Exams

Aviation vision exams require special testing and are only conducted at Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) and Miramar Marine Corps Air Station (MMCAS) Branch Medical Clinics. Aviation screenings are performed for all aviation personnel periodically. These screenings assess visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and eye pressure. A full exam is required if any test is failed during a screening.

Drivers License Renewal Exams

Many states require periodic vision assessments to maintain an active drivers license. A Drivers License Renewal Exam often consists of assessing visual acuity, visual fields (peripheral vision), color vision, and a slit lamp exam. Some states may require a dilated eye exam to rule out sight threatening diseases.

Contact Lens

Contact Lens Fitting and Education

Providers at each of our clinics fit patients in a variety of soft contact lenses when the need for contact lens wear is justified. Contact lens fittings are performed only at the discretion of the provider. Contact lenses are only purchased for active duty personnel working in a special warfare or aviation unit where required equipment impedes the use of glasses.

A contact lens fit involves assessing the lenses for proper fit and movement on the surface of the eye, ensuring each lens provides the proper visual correction, and training the patient how to properly insert, remove, clean, and store the contact lenses. A contact lens prescription is not the same as a prescription for glasses.

Specialty contact lens fits are performed only at NMCSD. Specialty contact lenses are only fit for patients that demonstrate a medical necessity for correction with contact lenses. These patients often suffer from unique eye conditions, trauma, or diseases which prohibit good vision with glasses correction alone. Some of these conditions include severe dry eye syndrome, irregular astigmatism, keratoconus and other forms of corneal ectasia.
