Health Education and Disease Prevention


What is Health Education and Disease Prevention?

Our Health Education and Disease Prevention classes and programs are designed to introduce health and wellness strategies to help you adopt healthy behaviors to prevent disease and improve your overall health. Classes highlight chronic disease prevention, diabetes education, nutrition education, injury prevention, and tobacco cessation. Weight management programs vary in length and number of sessions, and include the MOVE! Weight Management program, Eat Right for Life, and ShipShape.

Who can attend?

1. All Tricare beneficiaries are eligible to attend our Health Education and Disease Prevention classes and programs.

Operation Health Living (OHL)

This course is aimed to improve the overall health and wellness of its participants. As we discuss  some of the most common chronic diseases that affect the American population, you will gain a greater knowledge of how to potentially decrease or eliminate risk factors with an application of a healthy lifestyle. Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and poor quality of life, many in which are preventable.

With this class you will have an opportunity to:

1. Better understand metabolic syndrome, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetes and diabetes.
2. Understand the benefits of healthy living to prevent or slow disease progression.
3. Identify and utilize tools for healthy eating, exercise, stress management and sleep management.
4. Identify resources available to meet your health goal.

Injury Prevention

Regular exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle, we believe that it is important to prevent injury and stay safe during exercise, and with a little planning, this can be accomplished. This course will instruct on various ways to prepare the body for successful training with a focus on preventing injury.

With this class you will have an opportunity to:

1. Better understand what causes exercise injuries.
2. Gain knowledge on how to properly warm-up.
3. Understand the importance of hydration, sleep and regeneration.
4. Learn how overuse injuries and heat-related illness can be prevented.
 

Diabetes Self-Management

This comprehensive diabetes self-management program is designed to help participants self-manage  their diabetes by learning strategies and tools that can increase overall health and wellness. Through discussion, reflection and the support of others, lifestyle changes can be accomplished and lead to a better quality of life.

With this series of classes you will have an opportunity to:

1. Understand diabetes and how it affects your overall health.
2. Overcome behavior change challenges associated with diabetes as it relates to nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress.
3. Learn the proper tools and techniques of how to successfully manage your diabetes while working with a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist.
4. Decrease your risk of complications through understanding and prevention.

Get to Sleep

This class is aimed to improve the overall quality and quantity of sleep of its participants. As we discuss the importance of sleep on overall health we will explore common sleep problems and learn strategies to improve or develop good sleep habits.

With this class you will have an opportunity to:

1. Better understand how your body, mind, and your environment can affect your sleep.
2. Understand how your sleep quantity and quality can impact your overall health.
3. Develop a basic understanding of common sleep disorders.
4. Learn skills to improve or develop good sleep habits.

Freedom From Tobacco

This comprehensive tobacco cessation support program addresses the physical, psychological and social causes of nicotine dependence. As we discuss the health consequences of nicotine dependence we will explore the numerous benefits of quitting in a supportive environment.

With this class you will have an opportunity to:

1. Understand the health risks associated with nicotine dependence.
2. Develop a quit plan that can lead to lasting results. 
3. Identify your support system and determine healthy alternatives to tobacco usage.
4. Learn about the pharmaceutical options that are available at NMRTC/NMCSD.

MOVE! Weight Management Program

This comprehensive weight management program is designed to help participants self-manage their weight loss by learning strategies and tools that can increase their success. Through discussion, reflection and the support of others, lifestyle changes can be accomplished and provide lasting results.

With this 16 session series of classes you will have an opportunity to:

1. Develop a sense of community that can become a great support as you lose weight in a safe and healthy way.
2. Overcome behavior change challenges that relate to nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress.
3. Learn the proper tools and techniques of how to successfully manage your weight while working with a health coach.
4. Improve your overall health and wellness with proper nutrition and the incorporation of exercise.

ShipShape

This course is a comprehensive BUMED instructed Navy weight loss and health improvement program to support your active duty readiness. This program is recommended for member who fail or are in jeopardy of failing BCA standards. This program is suitable for any active duty member wanting to achieve their optimal health.

With this class you will have an opportunity to:

1. Better understand how proper nutrition can enhance weight loss.
2. Be encouraged to optimize your physical fitness for enhanced performance.
3. Learn how behavioral change can have a lasting positive impact on your overall health.

Eat Right for Life

This four session series is designed to help participants learn about safe and sustainable nutrition tips for weight loss and overall health. Through discussion, reflection and the support of others, lifestyle changes can be accomplished and provide lasting results. As you are working with our Registered Dietitian through this series of classes you will have an opportunity to:
1. Develop a comprehensive overview of weight management.
2. Overcome behavior change challenges that relate to nutrition, including cravings and or triggers with mindful eating practices.
3. Learn practical tools for meal planning, grocery shopping, eating out and more.
