Welcome to the Newborn Nursery division at Naval Medical Center San Diego. At NMCSD we offer full support to mothers and their infants after delivery with an average of 250-280 deliveries per month.
Except in special situations, you and your infant will spend the rest of your hospital stay rooming-in together after birth. Your support person is welcome to stay 24 hours a day. This enables parents to become more comfortable learning how to care for their infant. Friends and family members are welcome to visit at any time.
At NMCSD we provide full support through your decision in choosing the best feeding option for your baby. For mothers who desire to breastfeed we offer comprehensive in-house support. All medical staff caring for mothers and infants are educated and trained to assist and support the initiation of breastfeeding. A group of certified lactation consultants are available to meet one-on-one with all mothers for additional consultation and education. We offer daily group educational classes on breastfeeding for mothers as well as mothers’ support person on each post-partum hospital unit. NMCSD is dedicated to receiving a “Baby Friendly” hospital designation as part of the UNICEF/World Health Organization’s Baby Friendly Hospital Initiation and has implemented the WHO’s 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
The Newborn Nursery is staffed 7 days a week with a team of board certified pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners. For infants that need special care, we have a level III NICU available as well as a comprehensive group of pediatric and pediatric surgical subspecialists.
NMCSD offers a Newborn Clinic dedicated to the early care of your infant after discharge. We will ensure that your infant has a scheduled out-patient appointment prior to discharge from the hospital.
